Organization will always be a key factor to the success of this group. In addition to regular meetings, events, and activities, this group also will need to work collaboratively with other entities to make the most effective use of the resources that are available.
We are fortunate to have such a beautiful resource here in southern Minnesota. Not only does its integrity need to be preserved but it must also be promoted throughout the area to garner further input and support. In addition to the website and Facebook page that were created this group will need to find other methods of getting information out to the public.
Water quality has and will continue to be an area that is essential in maintaining a "healthy" lake environment. This will require collaborating with the DNR Regional Fisheries Department in Windom, supporting consistent seining, accessing other regional and local resources, and promoting healthy shoreline practices. This will be addressed through:
a. Education
b. Fall and Spring Seining
c. Shoreline Management Strategies
d. Inflow and Outflow Assessments
Effectively managing the inflow and outflow of the lake is critical to maintaining water quality and its fishery. The current inflow is being addressed by the Fox Lake Conservation League as they are establishing a wetland that will help filter water before it gets to the lake. The outflow is being affected by a dam structure that allows fish to leave the lake over the dam but provides no opportunity to return. The association is currently working with the DNR and FLCL to look at options that may be available.
With the population of the Big Mouthed Buffalo and other rough fish, it is essential that we continue to address its effect on the fishery. In addition to consistent seining and removal of a portion of this population, the association will work with the DNR to determine what other options are available to reinforce the fishery. 200+ pounds of pre-spawn perch were released in April of 2022. The perch population has readily decreased in recent years due to the effects the rough fish have had on their food supply. Perch are hardy, readily reproduce, and a healthy population would assist in replenishing the fishery. If this initiative is successful, we will request permission to release more fish in the fall.
